Blood Flow Restriction (BFR)
Blood Flow Restriction Training
Back On Track Physical Therapy is proud to announce that our clinics are now offering BFR!
Blood flow restriction training involves decreasing venous blood flow to promote growth and prevent degeneration of injured muscle(s). This treatment is usually done with resistance exercise but there is also evidence that proves its effectiveness with compression alone. A meta-analysis on low-intensity blood flow restriction training found the following (Loenneke, et al, 2011):
- Participants who were not benefiting from typical resistance training experienced improvement when combining low-intensity training with BFR.
- Improvements in strength and hypertrophy that are typically a result of heavy weightlifting can be achieved through exercising with BFR.
By avoiding intense weight bearing activities, soft tissue damage is prevented. This treatment can help prevent atrophy and loss of strength after injuries from sports, aging, surgery, etc.
