Blood Flow Restriction (BFR)

Blood Flow Restriction

Back On Track Physical Therapy is proud to announce that our clinics are now offering BFR!

Blood flow restriction training involves decreasing blood flow to promote growth and prevent degeneration of the affected muscle(s). This treatment is usually done with exercise but there is also evidence that proves it’s effectiveness with compression alone. A meta-analysis on low-intensity blood flow restriction training found the following (Loenneke, et al, 2011):

  1. Participants who were not benefiting from typical resistance training experienced improvement when combining low-intensity resistance training with BFR
  2. Improvements in strength and hypertrophy that is typically a result of heavy weightlifting can be achievement through exercising with BFR

By avoiding intense weight bearing activities, soft tissue damage is prevented. This treatment can help prevent atrophy and loss of strength after injuries from sports, aging, surgery, etc.
